My Family Roots in Oconomowoc, Okauchee and Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Lake Country is another name for the western suburban areas of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The name is justified.
There's a lake in or near every city or village. Water sports are us - both summer and winter! In the summer of
2009, the Oconomowoc Area Historical Society and Museum will feature an exhibit where past residents who
were participants in the Olympics are showcased.
Some of our communities are Oconomowoc, Hartland, Nashotah, Delafield, Chenequa, North Lake, Stone
Bank, Summit, and Okauchee Lake. I grew up in Okauchee Lake, on Ice House bay. I'm fourth generation water
rat, from my great, great grandparents, Theodore and Minnie Mahnke, to my parents, Emil and Barbara Ewald
who still live on the Pine Lake in Nashotah.

Welcome to beautiful Lake Country area of Wisconsin.
We are surrounded by lakes, Oconomowoc Lake, Lac La Belle, Fowler Lake, Crystal Lake, Silver Lake, the Oconomowoc River and
many other lakes are within a few miles. City Park, located on Lac La Belle in downtown Oconomowoc is a popular public swimming
and boat launch area, with lifeguards, a sandy beach, and plenty of grassy areas for picnicking. In summers, many different bands
play at the band shelter. For a calendar of events or more information see Lakes.
Although Oconomowoc is called a city, it is a small friendly community of less than 16,000, located about 35 miles west of
Milwaukee off of Interstate I94. Our streets are safe (we even have street dances in the summer!), downtown shopping area is full of
unique venues (like my favorite Sweetie Pies - a small diner with an incredible display of desserts of all kinds!) to art galleries,
antiques, clothing stores (like Beverly's designs), live theatre, and a variety of restaurants.
And we're growing! We have a round-about, which slows down the traffic wonderfully. And our busy highway has been re-routed to a
bypass around the city. Sidewalks abound. Walking in the summer around the lakes is a natural past-time. It's called the Fowler
Lake walk, and you'll meet many familiar faces as you go. The Pabst Farm development at the I94 and Hwy 67 area is just beginning.
We have many private and excellent public schools. See my link to their websites for more information. A new Theatre Arts Building
was completed at the Oconomowoc High School and is open to the public.
